Some really enjoy the feeling of fear ....
|
Investigators generally use one of Two theories to
explain why people like horror movies. The first is
that the person is not actually afraid, but excited
by the movie. The second explanation is that they
are willing to endure the terror in order to enjoy
a euphoric sense of relief at the end.
The reason people like watching scary movies is
that they are a way to experience both positive
and negative emotions simultaneously.
This dual emotional state may reinforce the need to continue
to watch horror films since it is an instance where
it is acceptable to feel in two contrary states. Such an
explanation might also account for why some people may enjoy
films that are very sad. You may enjoy such a film at the same
time you’re crying your eyes out.
Whatever the reason, watching scary movies is likely to
remain a constant cultural phenomenon. It has its roots
in ancient cultures where oral tales of significant horror
could certainly prove frightening.

And some really scared ....
|
|
One day Ramgopal Varma decided to "put people in a hall and
scare the hell out of them." Therefore, he made Bhoot. People
are scared, all right! One person is said to have died of
cardiac arrest in the theatre while watching Bhoot . "Any
intense emotion results in a sudden upsurge of blood to the
brain and the heart and in people who suffer from psychotic
and neurotic problems, it might prove fatal," says Dr Shekar
Doddamani, psychologist.
Amrita Rao, an advertising professional, says, "One week after watching
the film I was working late in the office. I was alone. A calendar fell
off the wall and I felt a chill run down my spine. Soon after I went to
the Wash room and looked into the mirror. Suddenly I was reminded of the scene
in Bhoot where Urmila looks into the mirror and finds another reflection.
I thought I was going to see one too. I told myself that I was acting silly
and it was after all a movie. My bravado lasted a second. I quickly locked
up the office and left." Amrita never works late anymore.
Why do people watch horror films when they know they will not be able to go
to the washroom alone in the night for the next few weeks? "The mystery of
the unknown attracts us and the fear of the unknown follows us after we
leave the theatre. That's the joy of watching horror films,"
Human beings!
